Toyota recalls 30,000 RAV4 plug-in hybrids over motor shutdown risk

27 October 2026 · William Fletcher MBE , Editor

Toyota is recalling approximately 30,000 examples of the 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid after a fault was identified in the engine control unit software that can cause the drive motor to shut down unexpectedly while the car is in motion.

According to a trade report, the problem lies in the vehicle's ECU software rather than any physical component. When the software encounters certain conditions, it can interrupt power delivery from the drive motor, which would leave the driver with reduced or no propulsion at speed. That kind of unexpected power loss carries an obvious safety concern, particularly on faster roads or in heavy traffic.

The remedy Toyota is applying is a software update carried out at a dealership, and the report states this will be provided free of charge to affected owners. No replacement parts are described as being required. Owners of a 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid should expect to be contacted by Toyota with details of how to arrange the update.

The recall covers the 2026 model year specifically, as stated in the source material. Drivers who believe their vehicle may be affected should contact a Toyota dealer for confirmation rather than waiting to see whether symptoms develop, since a motor shutdown at speed gives little warning.
